Indigenous peoples and Buddhists both see us not as in this world but intrinsically a part of it and inseparable. A simulation implies we can turn it off, but we'd be turning ourselves off in the process. This ain't no holodeck! Thanks, the postcards are great so far.

“We’ll come to understand anew that there is a deep connection between we humans and this world. And that this bond is the best definition we now have of the sacred.”

For many, this understanding may arise only after the painful realization of just how much over-immersion into digital reality has dehumanized them or else somebody they love.

Thanks Peco, coming late to the comments to this piece as I gather my thoughts for the new year. I couldn't agree more with the direction of your thought. I think that immersion in the virtual will teach us some powerful lessons; but many will be painful

Some really good supplementary listening might be The Telepathy Tapes on Spotify. They explore the world of communication between non verbal autistic kids and their mothers. Some of it makes one gasp with wonder.

I'm with you on that. And it's not just creating virtual worlds, which have arguably been a product since humans began social storytelling by an evening fire.

Just as most every film adaptation of Dune has left fans of the book shaking their heads, there is both something gained and lost in the fidelity of manifesting a singular reality, rigidly fixed from interpretation and the potential for personal ownership.

And just as the AI slop today proves to us that the value of creating a volume of text and imagery mostly pollutes the artistic soul, so to will the cheap proliferation of virtual worlds.

Yet I still hold out hope and a belief that all of this will largely serve to make us better crave the real, the authentic, the human imperfect as something rare, unique, and spiritually moving. Just as online dating apps have made genuine connection seem rarer, more special, and almost even unachievable in our modern times.
