Amazon hosted an online event last week, in which it launched a remarkable new range of services. That event got me thinking about a seeming paradox at the heart of our lives in 2020.

We say we care about privacy. We say we’re concerned about the incursions that Big Tech companies, including Amazon, are making into our lives. And yet we continue to engage with those companies as enthusiastically as ever.

It’s a puzzle that demands an explanation. And I think we can make one, via two key 20th-century ideas about the nature of freedom and our search for the Good Life.
